The Problem:

A complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test used to evaluate overall health and detect a wide range of disorders, including anemia, infection and leukemia. Easy, accurate, quick and low cost solutions for measuring CBC can go a long way to reduce morbidity and mortality in large parts of the world.

The Solution:

The project proposes an automated point-of-care device for performing rapid Complete Blood Count using a single cartridge for low-resource settings based on single-cell impedance measurement in conjunction with a patented micro fluidic device. Broadly, the instrument consists of a singleuse chip, the size of credit card, pre-loaded with reagents, to which the sample is loaded and which is fluidically insulated from the environment. The controller, the size of a toaster, performs the necessary fluid handling and the impedance measurements to deliver the results within minutes.
